Before you can market yourself, you have to know who your market is, and, more importantly, know who you are.

What do you feel you’re good at? What is your dream career in 10 years? At a recent AGA Regional Practice Skills Workshop, Jenny Sauk, MD, outlined academic and clinical practice career paths with a specific focus on reasons why you would pursue each path, and the wants, needs and types of personalities each path fulfills.

Dr. Sauk recommends:

  • Knowing you have what it takes.
  • Starting your Curriculum Vitae at the end of first year of fellowship.
  • Not burning bridges since a lot of jobs people want are not posted and are instead found through connections.
  • Cultivating things like “being a good person” and “a team player” since they become more important in standing out when those around you have the same skillset.

Dr. Sauk’s full presentation is available as a member benefit (login required).

Interested in attending a workshop? We’ll be having one on April 11 at the UPenn Biomedical Research Building.
