Dr. Maldonado-Contreras’ research group will study the effects of an anti-inflammatory diet in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Ana Maldonado-Contreras, MSc, PhD, of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, is the recipient of the 2016 AGA Research Scholar Award. With this award from the AGA Research Foundation, Dr. Maldonado-Contreras will focus on studying the intricate network of gut microbiota in relation to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
“Understanding the link between resident intestinal bacteria and inflammatory response against it in IBD patients is particularly important in order to bridge scientific research findings into actual IBD treatments,” Dr. Maldonado-Contreras noted.
Building on her published observations demonstrating successful implementation of an anti-inflammatory diet improving patient outcomes for those suffering with IBD, her group will implement this diet as means to investigate its subsequent effect on inflammation. Results from this study will provide new insights into the central mechanism by which gut microbiota influences inflammation, thus advancing the understanding of the etiology of IBD and ultimately, treatment protocols.
Dr. Maldonado-Contreras is grateful to the selection committee for recognizing her work and would like to thank the AGA Research Foundation and foundation donors for their generous support.
