The American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel approved a proposal from the AGA and five other specialty societies for new Category I CPT codes to report endoscopic bariatric device procedures at the February 2021 CPT Panel meeting. This proposal represents the culmination of several years’ work with our sister GI societies, surgical societies, industry and clinical experts. The new codes will be used to report “esophagogastroduodenoscopy with deployment of gastric bariatric device (eg, balloon) under endoscopic guidance” and removal. Please note that specific code numbers are not assigned, nor exact wording finalized, until just prior to publication of the CPT 2023 book. The codes will be effective January 1, 2023. See the February 2021 Summary of Panel Actions for the decision.
